So far, a savvy deal for salmon seiners

Back in January, we told you how Southeast Alaska salmon seiners were considering another round of permit buybacks to further trim the fleet.

That's not going to happen, at least not this year, says this update from buyback organizers.

As for last year's buyback of 64 permits, the update indicates the fleet is having no problems at all repaying its federal loan.

In fact, the fleet is looking to reduce its 3 percent landings tax to only 1 percent.

What would it take to have a gillnet buyback?

Anonymous said...

Congrats on the good work.

A reduction of gear in the water leading to increased values to the remaining users, and the existing users are bought out at a price they deemed fair to themselves.

Amazing. Cool. When can this come to a depressed fishery near me.

Zuanich made out well.

We all did just fine.

We all agree it's increased profits for remanding permits,so why is The landing tax to be reduced?? Only for more profit and is not the landing tax ultimately more revenue in future??

Anonymous said...

The buyback has not yet increased profits for remaining permits, because even after the buyback there are unused permits. The assessment should be reduced because a lower percentage will amortize the loan as required. Can't respond to your last sentence because it doesn't make any sense.

To get the same buyback deal for another fishery, you would have to resurrect Uncle Ted. The funding was tacked on to a big bill as buy-my-vote-pork, snort, snort. It has nothing to do with being a valid economically depressed fishery. They don't even have an optimum number study result.

Don't you know nuthin' 'bout politics son?

Woo! Nothing like a buy back to help the future fishermen. Oh wait it now cost 300k$ for a permit? Well just get a loan because fishing will be good forever. Let's keep making sure only those born into fishing can get in. Screw it let's do it with gillnet as well you greedy bastards. Hell why not just make salmon IFQ while you're at it that way nobody can ever buy in.

On yes and let's not pay off our 40 year loan to fast because good god I would hate to see zuanich pay it off ahead of time. Save some more debt for all those young fishermen to pay after you've retired. They'll need that on top of their giant permit loans... It'll keep them motivated.

we gillneter use to have a 100 permits on the beach not fishin, but with high prices there all fishing we need a little help too.it would be nice if the BOBBY T gang would help us out too.

Keep dreaming Dan, Bobbyt help a gillnetter-that will be a cold day in hell

I heard seiners don't like gillnetters!

Anonymous said...

Their little boats and nets get hung up on the bulbous bow.

11:10-the feeling's mutual!

Yep Dan these high prices sure are a bummer. I bet you hardly making enough to survive with those 100 permits being active. I mean I'd love to hear some numbers. How much less are you making now?

Everybody wants theirs. Gimme gimme. less for you means more for me.

Graying of the fleet what's that? I just want to buy back enough permits so that my crew will never be able afford their own operation... Well that and no competition, high prices, Lots of fish and to be able to sell my gillnet permit for a half million bucks when I retire. Because as one of the chosen few born into fishing I deserve it.

It's strange that in pws there are regularly boats waiting in lines that are literally 70 to 90 boats . But those "special" seiners In se have already had two buybacks

It was Ducketts choice to save the industry via a higher quality. We had our chance on a buy back.

Dan

I work for SEAS. Certainly be glad to help in my spare time

The blueprint is there.

And btw, Dan Vick is a great friend of mine, as are many gillnetters

And Dan was not 'born into' anything. We were next door neighbors growing up and Dan spent a 4 year stint in the navy during Vietnam. He's done it on his own as much as anyone else in this great state of ours.

And Dan, next time you are in juneau, come by my office and check out the bronze hammered pic of Pfi you gave to bob t sr. I have his entire office there.

Buybacks aren't for everyone. But it makes a lot of sense in some of our fisheries. Theyre voluntary. No one has a gun held to their head.

SE permits are high but pws are nearly as high without a buyback and recently lousy fishing

Maybe 50 cent pinks for 5 straight years has something to do with the permit prices eh?

A gun to the head, hmmmm........

Well thanks for the response Bobby. I like hearing the rest of the story.

Dan might not of been born into fishing and correct me if I'm wrong but was there limited entry when you got in? If so was permit price a barrier?

Buy backs are for everyone already in a fishery and never for those who hope to be. To bad for the future fishermen they don't get a vote.

last southeast permit I saw sell was what 290k? PWS permits are selling at 150K tops.

My permit 70000
Skiff 25000
Net 15000
Old wood boat 220,00

Total 330,000
1988

Took nearly 10 years to pay it off

Fished June to thanksgiving

How many years to pay off Stevens?

SE drift permits should be around 300 not 480 permits. All fleets in all of SE would benefit as well as better wild fish escapements. There is tremendous support for a SE drift buy back. I'm all for it...get workin on it Dan Vick maybe then we won't see you around mab during July:)

It's easy to think about one good year, but think of all the years before when you barely made it in SE drift.

Prices would be up, but so would the prospects for the new entrants.

Bobbyt worked for more than 10 years for the seine Buyback, gillnetters better start soon.

Slicing the pie 450 times makes for pretty small pieces.

Why don't you just sell out now when the price is high, before it goes back down to 50,000 again?

What a bunch of whiners! Only lowliners talk about buybacks!

Anonymous said...

Us lowliners have a whole thread on a fishing blog titled: "You know you are a lowliner when:"

Anonymous said...

You know you're a lowliner when... You're posting on deckboss during your off time instead of laying on a beach in Hawaii.

Anonymous said...

You know you're a lowliner when.... you can't even skim off a few salmon for your freezer.

Anonymous said...

You know you are a lowliner when you think people can't post from the beach in Hawaii.

You know you are obsessed with fishing when you are posting on Deckboss from a beach in Hawaii.

As a choker, I tend to get frustrated with our gear groups lack of direction, strategic planning & inability to get organized. There's only a select few of us that treat our operations as a business, the rest treat it as a summer vacation.
News flash-you are a lowliner if you take all winter off spending all your hard earned money & start the new season broke or in the hole! Don't stop working these prices aren't going to last forever, we've had some amazing seasons recently.

Anonymous said...

Oh I take my fish choking very seriously but I also take my hookers, blow and 8 months of debatchery seriously. So what if I'm broke every spring... YOLO

Hey Danny,Bobby T says you were a "famous tenderman" before you becam a gillnetter.Nice guy, yes, famous? not so sure.Anyway I think we could probably figure out a reasonable buy back plan without seiners input,Starting with a consensus of the fleet to see if it would fly,I'm not sure it would.deniews47
