In response to subsistence fishing closures in western Alaska, fish and game initiated in 2022 a genetic study of chum salmon harvested in the South Alaska Peninsula. The Area M June 2022 fishery harvested 544,064 chum salmon. Asian chum salmon (58.0%) contributed the largest proportion of the harvest in June with an estimated 315,162 fish. The Coastal Western Alaska Group (CWAK; includes Bristol Bay, Kusko, Yukon, and Norton Sound) had the second largest contribution (17.7%) with an estimated 96,116 chum salmon and the East of Kodiak group (13.4%) contributed an estimated 72,712 fish.
