A troller speaks out

An ongoing lawsuit that threatens to close their fishery has Southeast Alaska salmon trollers agitated, none more so than David Richey, who bought a full page in the Daily Sitka Sentinel to argue the suit is misguided.

I’m glad the author of this article brought up the fact of the Orca captures from the SRKW pods in the Puget sound back in the last century. As someone who remembers this having happened as a young boy in the southern Puget Sound, I have mentioned to different people how that could be one of the main reasons why their population might not be where it might be if those events hadn’t happened. One other point that I would bring up is that the doubling of the population of humans in and around the Puget Sound basin over the last 40 years certainly has impacted the Chinook salmon habitat there, not to mention the gross mismanagement of all of our salmon resources in Washington State.

Why didn't the letter bring up Frank Murkowski moving salmon stream conservation programs from ADF&G, and giving them to the miners, at the DNR? BobbyT was in heaven with Frank the Bank. Then he got Juneau to amend the Limited Entry Act regulations so one person could buy two permits. That solved a an issue, for his upcoming S.E. Alaska Buy Back Program. Somebody should have taught these trollers how to troll at the Governor's mansion. When those S.E. set net permits were eliminated, they didn't get a dime. Why was that?

just listened to problem corner on our am station here in sitka. a troller was a guest on there and all he did was trash seiners for killing off the herring hence mo salmon. i am so mad that it is even hard to type.if the trollers want to make war on other gear groups then its time for them to be gotten rid of.i was even thinking about donating some money but not now i want them gone. how dare you attack another gear group. mike svenson sitka

Svenson, seiners do fine trashing themselves, like when they seined up those Killer Whale's to haul to Sea World. Tilikum, captured at 2 years old, killed three of the four people killed in captivity by whales, and was the largest male ever seined.

Tilikum's name, in the Chinook Jargon means "friends, relations, tribe, nation, common people." Ever speak Chinook Jargon?

At Sealand, he lived with two older females, Haida II and Nootka IV who behaved aggressively against him.

This whale killed trainers Keltie Barnes, Daniel Dukes, and Dawn Brancheau.

How dare you not to know anything whatsoever about seiners.

It’s amazing how no one mentions the native fisherman who gillnet in the rivers and self report. Very little oversight for escarpment. You can save one of the following three seals, salmon, whales take your pick.

I think mike was just trying to point out that trollers have a problem and trying to shift the blame to another gear group is not the answer ever.

The current trend doesn't stop until all seafood is fully allocated to marine mammals. We are allowed to take the excess until then.

Thanks for clarifying what Mike meant but I don't forgive him. That was completely uncalled for. I am a troller and a longliner and "getting rid of trollers"would put my family on the street as well as many other families in Sitka and around Southeast Alaska. Just because one person speaks against the herring fishery doesn't mean we all believe that. It would be nice if Mike didn't fly off the handle and say such vile things.

Who is do you think flew off the handle, mike is not going to put you on the street. However that outspoken troller in the radio might if you don’t get a plan in place, all anyone is asking is you educated on the issue.
Really you think mike is the issue!
