Another big herring haul possible at Togiak

Plenty of herring again will be available for seiners and gillnetters next year at Togiak.

Here's the state forecast for the 2012 Togiak sac roe fishery.

It specifies a quota of 21,622 tons of herring.

The industry took 22,699 tons this year at Togiak, worth about $2.3 million at $100 a ton.

They'd probably go for 50 bucks a ton

What price did Sitka get?

$100 a ton comes to $0.05 per pound or 5 cents a pound? What a waste.

The only guys making money on that fishery are the seiners who are on their way to tend sockeye and wouldn't have a job otherwise.

Fishing for herring just about covers expenses these days. How about leaving them in the sea for the seals and the salmon to eat. Seals and salmon are better quality natural foods than the herring. This idea to provide herring for the world market while the poor Americans are starving on our shores in Western Alaska doesn't make for good common cents.
