Sitka scorecard

The Alaska Department of Fish and Game has posted its final tally from a rollicking 2011 Sitka Sound sac roe herring fishery.

"Seven processing companies and 48 permit holders participated in the fishery harvesting 19,429 tons of herring, slightly below the guideline harvest level of 19,490 tons," the report says.

Still no word on what, or whether, purse seiners will be paid for the catch.

Sitka Herring permit: $500K
Large product holdover from 2010
Dollars made from 2011 season: $0
Not to worry! Season will be made with huge salmon forecast. Naysayers, whiners, cryers and other assorted self-proclaimed seafood experts(bloggers)need not apply. How is that easy chair on Whidbey Island treating you so far?

No one ever accused seiners of being smart.

that huge salmon run is all that's left for the processors to make any money, don't expect the prices to be any more than poor. whidbey island might be better than anywhere else.

INCREDIBLE stupid.
The State of Alaska is the leader of the stupids. ADF&G has ruined every fishery it manages and is in the process of ruining this one.

Why did Bobby T, in 2010, hire Floyd KOOKESH (yes, that Angoon family) to lobby the BOF for EHS all the while Floyd Kookesh was the director of subsistence for Tlingit & Haida Central Council? Bobby used the F/V Pamela Rae, INCORPORATED to pay him:

http://doa.alaska.gov/apoc/pdf/2010LobbyistDirectory.pdf

He was hired beginning 1/22/2010 "Achieving EHS ( Equal Harvest Share) in the Sitka Sac Roe Fishery between now and the 2012 SE Alaska Board of Fish Finfish meeting."

And Bobby T was the lobbyist for the Sitka Herring Group at $20K.

Best of all, here is the announcement of the hire of Kookesh by Central Council:

As usual, Bobby T appears to be involved in some kind of under the table, backroom deal.

Anon (May 11 2:12 PM),

Bobby T is not the head of the Seafood NWO.

I see no issue with him hiring another Alaskan to work/lobby on behalf of his company and interests?

I for one support Bobby T and his efforts regarding the EHS for the Sitka Sac Roe Fishery, you can now see how well an Olympic style fishery works there for market and safety issues. I see Bobby T's means towards EHS ends as a worthy objective. EHS works great for Chatham and Clarence Blackcod.

ehs are a dream, no processor will stand for letting another fishery get away from them, like black cod and halibut. if you want ehs, try including the processors in the deal or forget it. after all, the processors turn herring into cash not the entitlement minded permit holders.bobby t is just waiting for you to realize that before he pulls anything off, in the meantime he will keep taking your checks.

What's wrong with including processors in the plan, I seem to remember a significant interest in IFQs for halibut and blackcod are in the hands of large corporate/processor interests too.

Entitlement minded permit holders? Come on now, if it wasn't for a permit holder there wouldn't be fish to harvest, process, sell, or eat. So get off the conspiracy wagon and join the 21st century. In fact a large portion of Sitka Sac Roe Permit holders also hold significant interests in processors too, as shareholders.

I'm glad processors turn herring into cash, even though this year its been tough to sell the roe, but hey, who cares about the value, just kill as many fish as you can as fast as you can, so you can brag in the bar, even though you didn't get paid for it. Sounds pretty good to me. LOL!!!
