And they're off at Sitka!

The Sitka Sound herring sac roe fishery opened at 1:15 p.m. today, the Alaska Department of Fish and Game reports.

Closed after 17 minutes due to excessive high grading (catch and release). Greed at its best.

ADF&G is reporting the opener ran from 1:15 p.m. until 2:32 p.m.

The season opener produced an estimated harvest of 650 tons.

An estimated 3,080 tons of herring have been harvested so far, ADF&G announced today.

That's a long way from the preseason quota of 30,124 tons.
