Potential comeback seen for Sitka herring

The Department of Fish and Game today announced a preliminary quota of 17,592 tons for the 2014 Sitka Sound sac roe herring fishery.

A harvest that size would signify a huge recovery from this year's disappointing 5,688-ton tally.

Fished Herring in Sitka for 25 years. Last year the entire fleet fished for unprecedented long openings in huge areas and were able only to harvest less than 50% of quota. There was no significant recruit presence. Certainly not in the magnitude of the pre season forecast of some 80,000 tons of recruits. There is someething seriously flawed with the population modeling. Two years in a row of the most efficient purse seine fleet in Alaska unable to harvwest 50% of a quota and the following year the quota is increased by 50%. Wose agenda and why?

There needs to be an investigation of the reationship between the adfg manager and theprocessors and also the model needs to be changed to allow a fishery BUT to protect the resource,Something is really weird about the sitka scenerio.there is missleading i,fo at best.the accuracy of the dive survey?Give me a break
