Endangered coral? NMFS says nope

The National Marine Fisheries Service has shot down a petition to list 44 coral species off Alaska as threatened or endangered. More here.

This is disheartening for other efforts to protect corals in the Bering Sea - let's hope the Council will stay ahead of the curve and consider taking action on its own instead of waiting for NMFS to catch-up.

I don't know how I'll live if thet coral continues to get broken.

The ocean acidification problem will change those corals forever. I am sure that our longline fishing efforts are really harmful to the poor things. Maybe more coral beds should be fenced in!

11:06 - this isn't an Oceana thing, this is a North Pacific fisheries thing. Get over yourself.

4:48 hook, line & sinker. Good to know enviro's are posting comments on this blog. I didn't realize we were actively harvesting coral in the north pacific.....you must work for Oceana:give Ted Danson our regards from the fishing industry!

Hey 7:33 - I aint Oceana or your worst nightmare greenies with litigation money. I'm a fisherman who doesnt like to drag up habitat. I like to fish, a lot. Therefore, I like a lot of fish to fish. I'm looking out for our savings account; you're just looking to burn through your checking account.

Sad thing is, the way our fisheries are managed, there's little incentive to keep you dirty fishermen from sacking the clean fishermen. I hope the North Pacific Council does something different in the Gulf.

20'ft. x 30ft' sheets of Deep Water Coral pulled up by Factory Trawlers continually all summer does a helluva lot of damage to the feeding cycle! Multiply that times 30 Effing YEARS, and Anybody could have a relatively Clean Fishery these days! How much does an Acre of Bering Sea/Zemchung Coral go for these days in Washington D.C. boys! Thanks for the Free Bee TED!...1978 was a give away to the draggers! It was the year the Female King Crab Sancuary was allowed to be towed into by draggers, because of LACK of Enforcement by Politicians who would of rather been paid millions of dollars thru back door methods for looking the other way!....It happened to the King Crab....Now it is happening to Salmon! The Fox has already been in the Hen House...And, these Cocks are just deciding on who's to go next!

Take away the sweepwire permanently.....

I wish crabbers could get together and get some help to fight the dragging. Maybe coal listing isn't the best way to go, but is there any way to get the feds and the state to take a look at the crab habitat protection we've got? I dont think it's working at all!
