Salmon rocks!

The statewide commercial salmon catch, all species, now totals right at 20 million fish, the Department of Fish and Game reports.

At Bristol Bay, the granddaddy of Alaska's salmon fisheries, the sockeye tally is 9.3 million.

Us poor people along the shores of the Norton Sound are waiting to hear what "records" our salmon runs have met or broke this year. "Records" news comes from our ADF&G management and it's their latest buzz word these days while our fish racks remain close to empty The affluent buy their salmon from Bristol Bay as nice vacuum packed filets. The affluent also take their trucks, boats and gear to wherever the fish are running. Some with jobs are on "Subsistence Leave" from their federal program agencies. Isn't that a crock of crap - unfair advantages of the rich and famous.

I heard that Golovin Bay, south of Nome a ways, broke a 20 year record for salmon in a little bitty Commercial Salmon fishery. So, that 'record breaking catch' was probably heading up toward Nome and Port Clarence. The subsistence fishers in the Nome area are left high and dry without those Chum Salmon while the state caters to a handful of fishermen who are most likely barely breaking even in their fishing efforts. Those few fishermen must have some pretty powerful lobbyists alright.
