Another problem for Peter Pan

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency is suing Peter Pan Seafood Co. to resolve violations of the Clean Water Act at processing plants in Valdez and King Cove.

Under a proposed consent decree, Peter Pan and another company, PSF Inc., would pay a civil penalty of $750,000.

The decree lays out requirements to monitor and manage seafood processing waste discharges.

The EPA lawsuit also names Silver Bay Seafoods as a defendant, due to Silver Bay's recent purchase of Peter Pan's Valdez plant.

Ignorance of the regulation is not an excuse, but probably should have been expected with the owner/management group that led the new Peter Pan. As for SBS, they need to very carefully examine any of the remaining Peter Pan facilities that they have leased and eventually could buy. They may skate on the Valdez problem if they promptly install the necessary equipment and controls.

As for King Cove, with this nail, it seems more unlikely that a legitimate buyer can be found. Fixing the King Cove problem would be costly.

Thankfully, Ben Blakey is en route to Alaska to save the day with his freezing barge. I heard "all eyes are on it." I am sure Cora and others are very worried about this market disruption.
