Russian trawlers are hurting Alaska, Peltola says

U.S. Rep. Mary Peltola on Monday addressed the Alaska Legislature and devoted a good part of her speech to fish and fisheries.

Curiously, the word bycatch appears nowhere in the address.

She does go after "lawless" Russian trawl fleets "pushing ever closer to our waters."

Don't forget the Chinese fleet!

And nobody challenges her to support her claims. What she fails to do is to target our own domestic fleets — the unconscionable waste of valuable seafood attributed to them, plus the environmental harm they cause by their fishing gear.

Why wouldn't she mention them? Pure speculation, but very possible, is that a large part of that high-seas greed is attributable to the Alaska community development quota groups who are heavily invested in those trawl fleets. Is Mary accepting campaign funds from them? Or maybe just backing off because of this election year?
