The revolving door, again

Glenn Merrill, a high-ranking official in the Alaska office of the National Marine Fisheries Service, has "separated from federal service" and "accepted a position in the private sector," this agency memo says.

Deckboss hears reliably that Merrill is going to work for Glacier Fish Co., a top trawl operator.

Merrill was assistant regional administrator in the Sustainable Fisheries Division.

His transition to the private sector means Merrill will vacate his seat as the U.S. government representative on the International Pacific Halibut Commission.

This certainly isn't the first time we've seen a regulator jump ship to join the ranks of the regulated. It happened last year.

And the beat goes on….

Haha. I think Mr. Merrill was already working for the trawl fleet well before this official announcement. No wonder he seemed to be carrying their water during the last halibut battle at the Council. Chris Oliver goes to American Seafoods and now this! What an absolute and discrediting embarrassment for NMFS.

Seems obvious the trawl companies are buying the science. This bullshit is ok with the feds? All decisions this joker & Oliver were involved in should be considered tainted.

Another blow to what is left of the NPFMC and NMFS' credibility. Nobody should be shocked to see the managers play favorites to the factory trawl fleet.

A career move from thankless gov't work to the private sector is common.

The primary reason is simple: the pay and benefits are much better in the new jobs than they were in the Fed or State jobs.

A quick transition from the public sector to a high paying job in the industry you were policing is an indication of corruption. There should be a 2 year cooling off period.
