So long, CFEC

Gov. Bill Walker has signed an administrative order transferring the administrative and research functions of the Commercial Fisheries Entry Commission to the Department of Fish and Game.

The move will save the state more than $1.3 million a year, Walker said in a press release.

How will this save $1.3 million? It sounds great, but he does not mention where those savings will be.

So the audit says to keep CFEC independent except for administrative duties (payroll, buying printer paper, etc.), and that there is no compelling reason why any of the other duties should go to ADF&G. So Walker classifies EVERYTHING that CFEC does as administrative. How will that fare for us fishermen?

Mr Walker is blinded by bad information about CFEC. The fact undoubtedly remains that a complete CFEC has and could continue to loyally serve the commercial fisherman and the state of Alaska for many years to come.

The entire commercial fishing economy is anchored at a complete CFEC. To give the research, data, budget and staff to ADFG would be similar to Auke Bay Lab biologists taking over Alaska RO NOAA fisheries.

Does ADFG really want this ANIMAL OR should we terminate a slimy deputy commissioner stroking his ego in the name of "Saving" a few bucks?

Sorry Governor Walker, a deputy with a shopping cart MBA has led Alaska right back into a giant fish trap.

Good Luck!

Dammit I have the CFEC online registration all figured out, I hope they don't change it.

Two audits of CFEC say the same thing. The agency is the size of an elementary school classroom, but two $200,000 commissioners can't lead and effectively manage the place.

Plus they haven't done squat to deal with permit application cases that are more than 25 years old.

This is blatant malfeasance by commissioners Benjamin Brown and Bruce Twomley. The governor has responsded with appropriate action. If the commissioners can't do the job, give it to someone who can. Someone more competent. The audit gives a blueprint for the $1.3 million in savings. That's what the governor sees.

Thank you governor. And best of luck to the CFEC employees who still work hard and help us when we need it. You deserve better and now you got it.

Pretty sure that as in most, if not all government offices there are people that have a difficult time finding somthing to, do to justify there 8 hour day, breaks, and benifts. Less Government and cronyisam makes for a more productive work place. The compelling reason is buracracy. If you don't need it, get rid of it.

Does anyone know what we have to do to renew a permit now? Is the online system working? The order said it was effective immediately. I wonder if ADF&G was ready.

This story drags on too long. About every 6 months we see a report that says what fails the CFEC leaders have. So lets move on. Let fix the broken administration, save money, and go fishing. Anybody got a problem with that?

Received word that the staff you talk to on the phone, and mail your renewal forms too are all the same. You will still get the professional and studious help you've been getting. Not sure about the online thing, but office staff is still in place.

So I’m at a meeting today where the CFEC commissioner gets up and talks about how awful, terrible, risky, this restructure is.

But he never talks about the real reason why we have this change. Never mentions that 2 audits point to gross mismanagement and hardly any work produced by him and his staff of lawyers.

The CFEC commish needs to get over it man. They need to get to work and realize we’re ready to move ahead. You want to do what we pay you for or not?? Whine about the Gov kicking your butt gets us nowhere. Let’s use my permit fee wisely.

Amazing 8:28, reading Tromley much? He got the D permit.
