Not exactly a stampede for commissioner's job

Only two people submitted applications by yesterday's deadline for the job of state fish and game commissioner: Cora Campbell and Ron Somerville.

Campbell, of course, is currently serving as acting commissioner.

Somerville is a former chairman of the Alaska Board of Game.

Under state law, it's now up to the fisheries and game boards, acting jointly, to send the governor a list of qualified persons to pick from.

For updates on that process, check here.

Gov. Sean Parnell already has said he wants Campbell as his commissioner.

What a fucking joke.

My guess is that morale in the Department just reached a new level.

Yeah, but UFA must be pleased . . . now that the dog caught its tail.

Let's see, now that we have UFA, SFW, CDFU and AOC well ensconced in ADF&G, its time to get down to doing the peoples business. Some of the peoples business that is.

"Up to the boards to send the governor a list of qualified persons . . ." How about getting some qualified persons on the boards first?

Geez.

Somerville is a great guy. He's who Hickel wanted but couldn't get, according to the folks in charge at the time.

But the die is cast.

Get over it folks. Cora will do a great job. She's got a great team. Who's well entrenched at ADFG? Try everyone. The subsistence director is now a deputy Commissioner. The 2nd past sport division director is now Assistant Commissioner.

This is the team. Now roll up your sleeves and assist in a constructive fashion, with names attached and send these suggestions in to the transition team.

Or just suck on your thumbs and whine like babies because a woman is now commissioner of fish and game who wasn't even born yet when most of us started sport/commercial fishing and hunting.

No one said anything about the gender or age of the acting commissioner. Your projecting/revealing your own biases.

Your comments on this blog are usually condescending and the one her is as well; you must think and would want us to believe that by God you are the "one" in charge. Didn't you get enough attention as a youngster? Or too much?

hey you can't talk to Bobby T like that hes better than us!!!

Anonymous said...

Thats what he told me anyway...

Anonymous said...

yep...nothing to do with age or gender. It has nothing to do with Cora at all. It has to do with the fact that we have 2...repeat TWO applicants for a commissioner job 'cuz the Gov has subverted the Boards authority in this process. Will the Boards stand up to it? Hell no; each and every one of them will have to ask Parnell for reappointment within the next three years. Both of those facts disappoint me.

Anonymous said...

Bob...if you think Cora is "the one" then she should have no problem standing tall with other candidates in the selection process.

But, no. Other good folks were bullied out of the process before the application period even closed.

A great team???? Sue Asplund??? Rossi??? Is there a biologist in the house? With the exception of returning Habitat Division to the Department, I'm greatly disappointed in where Palin and now Parnell have taken ADF&G.

Anonymous said...

Don't forget Bedford and Yuhas. How she got dropped into comfish division is beyond me.

Anonymous said...

I think Yuhas is now departed the department. When I first met her several years ago (when she worked for Bev Masek, the "legislator" from the Mat-Su, who pleaded guilty last year to conspiracy to commit bribery), I understood that she had completed high school and was previously employed as a beautician and/or hair sylist. Not that there is anything wrong with that -- and beauty, like much of what passes for science-based management, is only skin deep.

Keep it up guys. You probably voted for Joe Miller if you even live in the state.

As usual, anonymous posters.

You could be Osama.
You could be Brittney.
Who knows?

Just keep blasting people who are putting it on the line for public service like you would somehow do better

You who have no name.

Merry Christmas early because you won't see me around on here.

RickieBobbie here in support of my brother from another mother BobbyT - the rumors of ADFG's death under Commissioner Campbell are greatly exaggerated.

This is not BobbyT in disguise, though I did stay at a Holiday Inn Express last night.

The department will do just fine with the group being put in place.

As a person with a solid science background, I will note that when scientists learn to speak the everyday language of the people, then maybe they will be tabbed to go into management positions.

Bedford deals with SE Alaska Treaty issues on salmon - who jumps into that position if he departs?

Aspelund is a place holder at the current time until someone in comm fish steps up to the plate for the common good.

Yuhas was tabbed as one of three people to step in to do all the work that Tina Cunning, now retired, did for the department on state / federal issues. Yuhas is doing the federal subsistence issues - now, specifically detractors, how does a college degree in biology assist in being the point person for the state on federal subsistence issues - it is a regulatory / management position for which she is well qualified and familiar with the issues.

The current BOF and BOG members are qualified and represent the diverse group of interests in the state.

And finally as Commissioner, I would not underestimate the ability of Campbell to lead the department. At this point the jury is still out and she will have to earn the respect and trust of all concerned - but let's come back in a couple of years and do a review before writing her off completely -which is a big mistake in my humble opinion.

She is smart, articulate, listens well, and will approach management issues involves a team approach. Gee, just like they do in Silicone Valley. The belief that success is only generated with an alpha male at the top of the management pyrimid certainly is a common 20 th century business model, but many MBAs coming out of business school in the 21st century are prepped to lead management teams.

"As a person with a solid science background, I will note that when scientists learn to speak the everyday language of the people, then maybe they will be tabbed to go into management positions".

What a crock of solid BS. I'm so relieved that Ms. Cambell can translate for these inarticulate biologists and scientists. Then she can run her interpretation through the departments shiney new AOC-SFW-CDFU filter to see what they really intended to say all along, but just couldn't put into everyday language. "No" will come to mean "yes"; "that's a horrendous idea for the health of the resource" will come to mean "let's give it a try and see what happens".

How does a college degree in fish and wildlife biology or management assist one in dealing with hundreds of federal fisheries and wildlife proposals and associated issues? Gee, I can't imagine.

Anonymous said...

1. Not all scientists have trouble explaining science to lay people.

2. No one has argued that the prerequisite for commissioner is being an alpha male.

What part of Gov. Sean Parnell already has said he wants Campbell as his commissioner is hard to grasp?

Seems like a pretty simple concept.

He wants Campbell as his commissioner.

If you can't figure that out, try MayPax - the official tampon of NASCAR.

I think I will probably stop reading the comments on this blog very regularly until they receive some moderation. The news briefs are useful, but why click on comments when 75% of them are spam or the inside jokes of folks who appear to be nitwits in the first place? Why even have them?
