On June 28 at 2:54 p.m., the Alaska Wildlife Troopers received a report of an overturned or swamped fishing vessel, the Happy Hooker, in the shallows off the beach in the Ugashik fishing district, outside King Salmon, near Pilot Point, with three commercial fishermen in survival suits stuck on the listing boat. Four reported safe after seiner capsizes at Kodiak

From the Alaska State Troopers:

Location: Kodiak
Type: Rescue
On 7/22/23, at 12:50 p.m., Alaska Wildlife Troopers became aware of a commercial seine vessel that had capsized in Whale Passage, with four people onboard. Troopers responded to the scene and contacted the four occupants of the vessel, as well as residents of a nearby lodge, who saw the vessel shortly after it capsized and were able to render aid. When the vessel capsized, the skipper was in the wheelhouse and the crew was in the main cabin. The crew estimated they were trapped for approximately three minutes before they were able to escape the inverted vessel. They were then able to get aboard their seine skiff, which had remained upright. They all declined medical attention and appeared to have received only minor cuts and bruises. Another fishing vessel volunteered to tow the seiner to shallow water, by a nearby beach, and secure it. The four crewmembers of the seiner were transported to Kodiak aboard the P/V Cama'i.

Boat sinks, three people saved in Southeast

The U.S. Coast Guard reports a commercial fishing vessel sank in Southeast Alaska.

The Coast Guard on Monday received a report over Channel 16 from the F/V Miss Amy stating the vessel was taking on water in the vicinity of Lisianski Strait and Porcupine Rock.

The Miss Amy was unable to keep up with the rate of flow and sank in approximately 150 feet of water 5 miles offshore, the Coast Guard said.

All three passengers aboard went into the water and were rescued by the merchant vessels Cirus and Lucky Strike, which responded to an urgent marine information broadcast.

"We're especially grateful to good Samaritan vessels Cirus and Lucky Strike," said Coast Guard Petty Officer 2nd Class Matt Bitinas, watchstander at the Sector Juneau command center. "Their quick response saved three lives."

State records list the Miss Amy as a 37-foot troller.

'Mayday, vessel Masonic going down'

The U.S. Coast Guard says it rescued five people from a life raft early today after they abandoned their fishing vessel southeast of Sitka.

The Coast Guard identified the vessel involved as the Masonic, homeported in Sitka.

We haven't confirmed it, but this vessel presumably is the famed wooden halibut schooner Masonic, built in 1930.

The five survivors were taken to Sitka uninjured, the Coast Guard said.

At 2:33 a.m., Coast Guard watchstanders monitoring Channel 16 heard a distress call: "Mayday, vessel Masonic going down."

The life raft was found on the north side of Coronation Island, with all five people aboard wearing survival suits.

"The life raft was tied off to the stern of the grounded fishing vessel," the Coast Guard said.

Sitka man rescued from sinking troller

From the Alaska State Troopers:

Location: Sitka
Type: Search and rescue
On 10/27/18 Alaska Wildlife Troopers onboard the P/V Courage responded to a distress call from a vessel reportedly rolling over outside the Sitka harbor. Troopers located Calvin "Mark" Bigelow, 62, of Sitka, onboard a partially capsized and rapidly sinking 40-foot commercial troll vessel, the F/V Safari, near Kasiana Island. Bigelow was transferred to the P/V Courage safely. U.S. Coast Guard personnel and salvage crews responded to the scene for investigation, potential spill response and recovery operations. The vessel reportedly became unstable in a heavy gust of wind causing it to list severely and take on water. Bigelow was transported to the Sitka harbor. No injuries reported, no impairment involved.

Four rescued off sinking vessel near Sitka

From the Alaska State Troopers:

Location: Sitka
Type: Search and rescue
On 1/19/15 at 0546 hours, the U.S. Coast Guard asked Alaska State Troopers and Sitka Mountain Rescue to assist in the recovery of four adults from the 80-foot tender F/V Eyak, which had run aground 16 miles south of Sitka. The vessel sustained hull damage and was taking on water. The captain was identified as David Castle, 48, of Sitka. Crewmembers were identified as 29-year-old Anna Zallau, 23-year-old Charles Wlaslewski and 49-year-old Debra Rose, all of Port Alexander. The captain and crew had no flotation devices or survival suits. An Alaska Wildlife Troopers vessel and a Sitka Mountain Rescue vessel with divers responded to the scene and recovered the captain and crew from the sinking vessel at 0755 hours. The vessel flipped and sank shortly after and only a small portion remained above water. No one was injured and all rescued parties refused medical attention. A Good Samaritan vessel is attempting to pull the vessel to a better grounding location.

Four rescued after seiner capsizes near Valdez

A 40-foot purse seiner, the Auriga, capsized Monday near Valdez, the U.S. Coast Guard reports.

The four crewmen climbed aboard the Auriga's skiff and the good Samaritan vessel Cornelia Marie rescued them, the Coast Guard says.

The Auriga was fishing in the vicinity of Eaglek Bay when a storm approached from the southeast.

"The crew ceased fishing operations and prepared for the storm but a large wave reportedly caused the Auriga to capsize," the Coast Guard says. "The Auriga remains capsized and partially submerged in the vicinity of Unakwik Inlet."

The boat had about 18,000 pounds of fish aboard.

State records indicate the Auriga, a fiberglass Beck built in 1980, belongs to Thomas Lopez.
