Environmentalist in, trawler out

Washington Gov. Jay Inslee has named Becca Robbins Gisclair, of the Ocean Conservancy, as his top choice for a seat on the North Pacific Fishery Management Council.

If approved by the U.S. commerce secretary, Robbins Gisclair would take the place of Anne Vanderhoeven, who is government affairs director for trawl company Arctic Storm and who has served on the council for only one term.

Vanderhoeven did a disservice to her trawl constituents by being overtly biased. Anytime she speaks at the council meetings you can see people visibly cringing. Her and Madsen are hard to listen to.

What an incredibly welcome change this would be to the North Council if/when the appointment is confirmed. And it's great that, for once, the pollock interests will have to learn how to play defense in their own homeport.

It's been just way too easy for them, for way too long, playing offense with their Alaskan appointments.

Trawl is in late stage defense. The last attempt at a trawl restriction was avoided by the pollock fleet threatening to catch more Chinook if the King Crab Sanctuary was closed.

The trawl fisheries that Alaska is accustomed are not going to last and it is going to be a major shock to communities like Kodiak that became reliant on trawling. Trident selling out is just the beginning.

I don't understand why all you guys who are against trawling sign in as anonymous. There's always two sides to the story but you always seem to have trawlers guilty even before a trial. Tree huggers. Get a real job, I say. Maybe on the deck of a trawler.
