Alaska crab news has been pretty depressing lately. Now comes something brighter.
The Alaska Department of Fish and Game today announced a Tanner crab quota of 5.8 million pounds for Kodiak. That's a huge jump from last season's 1.1 million pounds.
What could go wrong, increase the quota by 500%, don't let stocks build up so we can have 50 million pound seasons. Management has proven themselves inept, if we were smart and organized we would only land 2 million pounds.
The data has been showing that this strong recruitment was coming. Glad to see it actually happen. https://www.alaskajournal.com/2021-09-22/fish-factor-huge-tanner-crab-cohort-good-news-gulf-alaska
On the Kodiak trawlers, the word is they haven't been hitting crab grounds on the East side as hard, but I haven't seen a study to show it - just rumors.

ReplyDeleteYeah, just let them grow old and die. They don't live forever.
