Sandy has sailed

Alaska's attempt to grab some Superstorm Sandy money for its Chinook salmon disaster has failed.

President Obama has signed a $50.5 billion relief package for the October hurricane that trashed New York, New Jersey and other Northeast areas. Congress gave final passage to the bill Monday.

U.S. Sen. Lisa Murkowski, R-Alaska, voted in favor of the Sandy bill despite the omission of aid for federally declared fishery disasters in Alaska and other states. But she complained about it and said she'll keep looking for a way to reel in federal funding.

Critics panned efforts to use the Sandy bill as a vehicle to address fishery disasters in states far off the storm's path.

it's ok, just plant more corn.

I'm glad they slashed it. I found it embarrassing for the state to claim disaster funds for a fishery they manage, while the draggers keep plugging away. Akin to building a house on a flood plain..

It's good to see Congressmen paying closer attention to those bills worth billions of dollars.

Now, if that happened in 2006 with the Coast Guard rider to the Magnason-Stevens Act, perhaps the CDQs would be strictly monitored by both the state and federal governments. As it is now, millions of dollars are being played with by the CDQ managers without guidelines or oversight.

It is not surprising seeing that Lisa is in the pocket of the trawl industry.

The trawl industry is working hard to last as long as possible. It's to their benefit that they have every influential person and agency on their side right down to hatcheries marking salmon to track their returns to the rivers becoming empty in Western Alaska.

A politician can never be embarrassed.

One who "can never be embarrassed." has no conscience therefore there is no right or wrong in their beliefs.

ok then, I am embarrassed that my politicians asked for money.

I'm not embarrassed we asked for the money.

It blows as hard as Sandy 3-4 times a year in most of our coastal towns and we just call it a hard blow.

These New Jersey and NYC folks are just a bunch of pussies who built their houses on the sand.

Didn't they read the fricking bible?
