Begich wants Yukon-Kusko disaster declaration

Here's a letter from U.S. Sen. Mark Begich, D-Alaska, asking Gov. Sean Parnell to declare a "fisheries disaster" for the Yukon-Kuskokwim Delta.

Chinook returns to the Yukon and Kuskokwim rivers have been especially poor this season.

A disaster declaration for the Chinook run failures of 2008 and 2009 on the Yukon resulted in $5 million in federal aid.

Where is the money from the CDQ groups, which is supposed to help their village members?

Of course, Parnell is happy to take money from the feds when it suits him. Hypocrits, all.

There is no "money from the CDQ groups" that "is supposed to help...village members.." CDQ managers have the "village members" money tied up in the pollock fishery, yes, that same fishery destroying the salmon in the sea.

Mr. B will do Western Alaskas thousands of poor people whose culture and tradition of living off the salmon a world of wonder if he steps in with a Congressional Act to redirect the CDQ program to become accountable and responsible to the owners of the program.

No more band-aid fixes in the form of "disaster" funds. Fix the wound that has become the CDQ program and the poor people will re-elect you over and over again Mr. B.

I read that since this is an "election year", the CDQ program will be left as is until next year. The CDQs will contribute to the politicians to oil up their platform for sure.
