Johnstone in, Smith out on Board of Fisheries

Gov. Sean Parnell today reappointed Karl Johnstone to the Alaska Board of Fisheries. Johnstone currently is board chairman.

The governor named Orville Huntington to replace board member Mike Smith.

Here's a press release from the governor's office.

  1. Mr. Huntington will be a great addition to the Board of Fisheries. I support his appointment 100%.

  2. Ah, very apparent how the Gov, who was supported heavily by the fishing fleet, feels about our industry, ignoring our favored applicant. This guys just gets better as he goes.

  3. Don't know Mr. Huntington, but wish him well. I guess Bob Penney didn't feel it was that important to keep Mr. Smith on the BOF.

Reappointing Mr. Johnstone is a BIG middle finger from the Governor to the commercial fishing fleet here in Alaska. Too bad Parnell didn't send the ethically- challenged Johnstone back to the golf course in Arizona.

I guess we know where Parnell stands...thanks, Gov.!

  4. Karl Johnstone's disdain for commercial fishing is pretty evident to those of us who has observed him in action these past three years. Its a stretch to make the case he's even a resident of the State of Alaska to boot, which makes his reappointment a slap in the face to every Alaskan. He's politically connected, for sure, which is apparently all it takes.

  6. Speaking of links, how about this one:

where the Alaska Judicial Council recommended that Johnstone be removed from the Superior Court bench, back in the day.

Something about lack of integrity and an abundance of arrogance.

  8. It ain't over 'til its over. Contact your legislator and ask them them not to approve Johnstone to the BOF. Don't just roll over on this, you can make a difference if you give it some effort.

  9. Anon@9:43--Nice thought, but it is almost impossible to block confirmation, unfortunately. Especially since Johnstone has a fan-club in several key Anchorage/Mat-Su legislators, plus he has the Kenai River Sportsman Association boys roaming the halls in Juneau spending Bob Penny's money to make sure the votes go the right way.

I was hoping Parnell would do the right thing, and at least put an Alaskan on the BOF.

  10. A primary purpose fo the BOF is to create and maintain orderly fisheries in the state, for commercial, sport, guided sport, personal use and subsistence users.

The Governor's office has 70 letters from disgruntled guided anglers from the Tsiu River who were not happy that Mr. Smith caved to processor pressures and asked for reconsideration of a 5-2 vote that created separation between anglers and commercial harvesters on the Tsiu River silver fishery.

Smith and Webster flipped positions after "new" information was presented. New information, found in RC 139 of the SE finfish meeting, included the idea that anglers enjoy fishing with commercial operators on the Tsiu River cause it creates a Deadliest Catch atmosphere...

Oh, and there is a strong market for blush fish...

Except for the fact there videos show a litter line a dead, net marked, male blush fish after an in-river episode of the Deadliest Catch.

Guess there is a market for female blush silvers, but not male blush fish.

That definitely indicates the existence of an orderly fishery.

  11. karl johnstone and you get 10 posters

bobbyt used to be pres of ufa and you'd get 50 guys logging on here to bash him.

that's why commercial fishermen suck wind in Alaska.

  12. It looks like the anonymous attacks by you Commercial guys just did not work. Johnstone received an enormous amount of support from all across the state by people who recognized what a good job he is doing regardless of whether he spends some of winter outside the state. Hell he must be in his 70's. And he is willing to be on this board! that would be the last place i would want to be with all the thankless work and long hours. And for what: to read the crap who hide under the anonymous title. Leave it you all and soon we would not have to worry who is on the Board, because there simply would not be a harvestable surplus where ever you all were. You would just take it all, wouldn't you? Smith made a big mistake by changing his vote and it likely cost him his seat. But at least in the past he saw through the phony conservation espoused by some of the commercial crowd of which it seems you are members. Better get used to the idea that this board will be fair and balanced and you will not always get your way
