Chasing major hatchery news

Deckboss hears that salmon hatchery operators in Prince William Sound and in Southeast Alaska are seeking state approval to significantly boost production.

A meeting of the Prince William Sound Regional Planning Team has been scheduled for April 21 to consider the request from the Prince William Sound Aquaculture Corp.

Look for an update as soon as full details become available.

It will be interesting to see how ADFG responds to the request in light of all the issues in the recent past.

Will Deckboss please get and post the December 2009 letter PWSAC sent to the department when the department made its 2006 audit "public" last year (although Deckboss reported it in 2006 in an ADN article). PWSAC's ex. com. minutes refter to this letter.
Thanks

Funny how PWSAC is spending so much money in Juneau right now (as reported last month on this blog) - almost like they know they they won't win this one if actual science, common sense, or the State's wild stock priority policy (5 AAC 39.220) gets in the way. Oh, and did I mention that Trident is lobbying down there too? They don't care about lower prices, but fishermen might.

Say goodbye to WILD Alaskan salmon...

Demand for Salmon continues to improve as do prices. Hatcheries provide a renewable resource and healthy food, unlike mining and oil, what better way to grow our economy.PWSAC and other hatcheries remain mis-understood because of the bias in reporting. Get the facts straight.

I agree with the commenter above that hatcheries provide a healthy renewable food source for Alaskans and the world. But I perceive a lot of defensiveness of the part of hatcheries, rather than a willingness to admit that there are problems that need to be fixed. And if they never man up and take responsibility, then it's up to us as Alaskans to demand it.
