Coast Guard conducts medevac west of Kodiak

A Coast Guard helicopter today medevaced a crewman off the fishing vessel New Venture in Shelikof Strait, 95 miles west of Kodiak.

The crewman, whom the Coast Guard didn't identify, was reported to be experiencing chest pain.

High and dry

The 53-foot fishing vessel Sisiutl hard aground in Portage Bay off Shelikof Strait, 133 miles southwest of Kodiak city. U.S. Coast Guard aircraft this morning responded to help the three crewmen, who had donned survival suits but were in no immediate danger. The crew hopes to refloat the boat on the evening tide. Runaway barge!

The 143-foot barge Brittney Moe is adrift in Shelikof Strait southwest of Kodiak Island after the tug Seahawk lost the tow in heavy weather early Tuesday. The tug experienced a partial loss of steering in the mishap, the U.S. Coast Guard said. The barge is laden with a forklift, a shipping container and a layer of ice. She's in no danger of running aground and plans are in motion for the Seahawk or another tug to recover the craft. USCG photo
