Rep. Begich wants North Pacific Council revamp

Congressman Nick Begich, R-Alaska, has introduced a bill to restructure the North Pacific Fishery Management Council.

The Anchorage-based council makes recommendations for managing ocean fisheries off Alaska. Its 11 voting members come from Alaska, Washington and Oregon, and most members are representatives of government agencies or commercial fishing interests.

Begich's bill, the North Pacific Fishery Management Council Representation Enhancement Act of 2026, would guide Alaska's appointments to the council.

The legislation would "require that voting members include at least one representative each from recreational, small-scale commercial, rural subsistence, and urban subsistence user groups," says this press release from Begich's office.

Oh boy a council that will look just like the laughing stock of the board of fisheries. Maybe it will subvert science and public process as well. Great job Nick probably should make Marit the chair while you’re at it. Guess the KRSA money is in DC too. Do you get a free plaid shirt from Rueben!

Begich is a KRSA's gomer on the Hill. No surprise this came out immediately after KRSA, David Bayes, and American Sportfishing Association met with his office.

As the saying goes: "You can submit a bill for show, or submit a bill for go." This Begich move is driven purely to garner votes at home ("See! I did something!") and will have no practical effect whatsoever.

And by the way, how would he define a fisheries "urban subsistence" representative for Federally-managed fisheries?

Is there such a term as Urban Subsistance?
