A down year for salmon

The Alaska Department of Fish and Game has released its summary of the 2024 commercial salmon season, and the numbers are nothing to shout about.

The total catch managed to crawl above 100 million fish, finishing at 101.2 million. That's a 56 percent decrease from the 2023 total.

"The 2024 commercial salmon fishery harvest for all species was valued at approximately $304 million, a significant decrease from $398 million from the 2023 season," the department reports.

100 million's a good number, just like in '87 and '88 with record prices. 2016, '18 and '19 didn't make 120 million. With this modern hatchery oscillation running wild again, quite similar to when Mother Nature raised all the pinks, PWS was closed every other year. It's not nice to fool Mother Nature, and fools think they can. '24 ain't bad, '02 was 130 million at $164 million, half of '24 dollars with 30 million more. What did that task force accomplish that year?
