Get your bids in, boys!

Looks like Southeast Alaska salmon seiners are pursuing another buyback to further reduce their ranks.

Here's a letter that went out to permit holders recently.

You'll recall that last year, the fleet bought and retired 64 permits using a $13.1 million federal loan.

The fishery currently has 315 permits.

That will give more ammo to the trollers and gillnetters when they go to BOF with reallocation plans.

WTF!

Yeah

Get ready with those pink salmon reallocation plans

ESP when seine fleet has grown from 205 permits at start of bbAck to 281 today

So seiners need more fish as there are more seiners fishing

Gotta go get more troll and gillnet fish

Where is that optimal number study again?

And someone loudly claimed last time Tom Manos retired, didn't see that happen.

IT Would nice if BOB T would put in some effort for the gillneters we have over 400 permit too.

Fact is seiners were dumb enough to buy into the greedy sham of the buyback the first time and chances are their greed will overcome them again. It is just too bad they cannot see how they are contributing to the demise of their own fishery. If gillnetters and trollers make a play for more area, the seiners have nobody to blame but themselves. The regulation and taxes are starting to overtake them. When will seiners see that the "organizations" that are supposedly there to help them are actually harming them and creating more chaos by their inability to plan for the future of the fishery.
The question is " Was the 1st round of the buyback worth the indebtedness we now have strapped to our backs"?

Man, if you can't beat em join 'em.

The SE seiners took out like 20% of the permits in that fishery with the buybacks and they're still going for more.

A 3% tax to take out take out 20% of the 474 SE gillnet permits sounds like good business to me. I wouldn't mind fishing around a hundred less guys.

That'd probably be a lot more effective than trying to wage a re-allocation war when the gillnet fleet is over our technical allocation anyway.

9:07 this is what it's all about ! You know your fleet needs less effort n you also know this has paved the way for fisheries throughout the state to follow. We all have friends that are involved in a lot of different fisheries throughout the state and if you have any type of class you would wish the best for them. When it comes to allocation in southeast, I think if we could figure out a way to spread all fisheries throughout the region, would be best for for all user groups. Basically keeping people on their turf and not stepping on toes.

Gillnet buyback is a great idea,
the need will become apparent when there are 200 boats @ Mab this year.
How do we start?
100 permits would be a good start.

The gillnetters should reach out to Bobbyt since he paved the way......Talk about strange bedfellows.

The seiners got that money From the Feds in a different time though, who knows if we could get the money now.

Bush Alaska is way beyond needing leaders with good "reading and writing skills". We need compassionate leaders with the ability to reason right from wrong. We need compassionate leaders who recognizes that a healthy, local economy is good for everybody. We need compassionate leaders who think of themselves last. We need to get rid of the finks who are ruling on ignorance and favoritism. They stand out in a crowd because they hold court with themselves and their cronies.
