Search under way for man overboard off Kodiak

The U.S. Coast Guard searched today for a fishing vessel crewman reported to have fallen overboard about 30 miles northwest of Sitkinak Island.

Sitkinak is south of Kodiak Island.

The Coast Guard said it received notification at 10:53 a.m. from the F/V Flying Ocean that one of its crewmen went overboard while crab fishing.

Winds of 20 mph and 6-foot seas were reported in the area.

The cutter Hickory, an MH-60 Jayhawk helicopter and a C-130 airplane searched the last known position of the missing crewman, the Coast Guard said.

In a separate case, a Coast Guard helicopter early this morning rescued five fishermen from a Sitkinak Island beach.

They abandoned their vessel, the 58-foot Kodiak Isle, after it struck a rock and took on water.

The boat was still afloat at 2:30 a.m. when the helicopter departed the scene with the survivors, the Coast Guard said.

The flying ocean was cod fishing.

Thanks. I figured the Coast Guard was incorrect, as I was unaware of any open crab fisheries.

Kodiak isle sinking is the fourth incident involving groundings, hit rocks in last three years. Afognak strait grounding on Herbert is. Involved the same gang. These guys should not be allowed to operate any vessels, I guess someone needs to lose their life before meaningful action occurs.

Hows about someone look at the hydraulic/steering systems on Fred Wahl boats? Guess ill be the one to call out the elephant in the middle of the room....

How's about guys start using bridge alarms. I don't know what happened for sure in this case but they would save a lot of boats.

Don't even go there with the steering system 3out of 4 times Tim fell asleep at the wheel. Not sure on latest but crew states there was no mechanical issue AT ALL.

I heard the shaft alley was flooding, and was flooding into the engine room.

Mistakes were made, but the boys handled the most important part very well. Everyone home safe and sound and, from first hand account, it could have been much worst. They deserve praise.

Mistakes!!!! Total disregard for safety and even more a total lack of experience!!! How many more mistakes before someone has to die...
