• The City of Unalaska is looking to upgrade its Spit Dock, which provides moorage for commercial fishing and other vessels up to 300 feet. More details in this request for proposals.
• The Port of Seattle has completed a $98 million redevelopment project at Terminal 91, restoring moorage for factory trawlers, motherships, research vessels and more. Improvements include a building for lease to American Seafoods. Here's a quick video explaining the project.

Seattle’s port relies exclusively on a model of their boats coming to Alaska and taking the product and money back to Seattle. When will Alaskans say enough is enough?
Alaska's fishing communities rely exclusively on outside investment to process fish and transport that fish to market. Just like every other resource industry in Alaska.
I’ve been fishing in Alaska for 45 years. I’ve lived there for seven of those years in a for a lot of reasons I couldn’t stay there but I’m a US citizen. Some Alaskans not all Think that they’re from a foreign country grow up live in the real world.
If the Alaskan fishing fleet was in Washington state killing 4,000,000lbs of juvenile halibut ANNUALLY, Washington State would put an end to it immediately. Why are Alaskans supposed to put up with this crap?
People like you take take take from Alaska for decades without leaving one tax dollar. You kill millions of pounds of non target species. Then you have the audacity to tell us to grow up when we speak up! How bout you stay in Washington and make a living
Why do Alaskans put up with the killing of 2 million pounds from the Alaskan longline fleet?
Hate to break it to you, but the non-trawl bycatch was 64 million pounds last year, the same as the dirty old bottom trawl fleet you seem so fixated on (pollock was half that, at 34). Did you know that fixed gear has 28 times the amount of sponge and coral bycatch too? Go take a lap with your anti-trawl BS. All fisheries have impacts; those impacts are all managed by the most rigorous fisheries laws in the world.
If Alaskans don’t like people from Washington owning salmon permits and drag boats in Alaska may be Alaska’s need to buy a boat and permits Nobody seems to want to. It’s free enterprise just like in every other state.
Do we need to remind people what the difference between a state and federal fishery is? Outside 3 miles fisheries are managed by the federal government, inside it’s the state. Most trawling and the bulk of the hook and pot fisheries take place in federal waters, as in it belongs to everyone.
If states like Alaska want to manage the Bering sea and GOA they best come up with the budget and proposal to manage those waters themselves and come up with solutions. Maybe the feds would be happy to hand it over.
killing 2 million pounds of what? which longline fleet, state or federal waters? do some of the ak ll fleet have federal and state water permit
Seattle should make the dock big enough to permanently moore the trawlers. Shut down the Seattle pollock fleet, they aren't even competitive with the Russian trawlers.
4:02 pm is spot on. It’s just a shame that some of those loony candidates for governor don’t know this. I would say educate them but I’m sure it be a waste of time. Maybe ms Behnken will educate JKT. 🤫
The halibut longline killed 1.7 million pounds of undersized halibut last year. All wasted and thrown overboard.
Guess you haven't looked at prices lately. But no worries, you're clearly either not a fishermen or some lifestyle setnetter or troller that makes all their money from your NGO paycheck.
It’s cheaper for carpet bagging nonresidents to live south than in Alaska Therefore they can pay more for fishing boats and permits. Non residents pay nothing for Adfg management and other state government services. They contribute nothing to the social fabric of our communities. So when you fish around a carpet bagging nonresident cork the ^*#% outta them
If longliners had no minimum size limit like the non resident charter fleet, they wouldn’t discard any fish. Bout time we figure out how many halibut the charter fleet sorts through to get one in their size slot limit
So because it federally managed it’s acceptable for bottom trawlers to kill 1,000,000 juvenile halibut a year as bycatch? How bout you stay in Ballard
Hey 4:58. You must just don’t like the word trawler. You apparently know nothing about the fisheries in Alaska. Do some research and find out what the longline fishing does for bycatch and mortality of juvenile halibut and whatever else decides to bite the bait.
And pulls up coral and whatever else. The hundreds of thousands of pots that are pulled in a year are doing more damage than trawling to the bottom. You need to get educated before you open your mouth. Make a trip or two with ms Behnkens group. ALFA. You don’t realize there’s a lot of us REAL fishermen that participate in multi species fisheries that know what the hell we are talking about. Nobody likes bycatch. But it happens in all forms of fishing.even your sport fishing Not just trawling. It’s time for you to wake up and open your eyes.
You don't seem to understand how fish tax revenue works. Pollock and crab are the two highest contributors combined. What fishery are you in, neighbor?
Pot fishing should be only fishing in alaska no bycatch.
We all know draggers in the bering sea on bottom all the time. Unimak pass a waste land.
You all are arguing as if you're on different sides. Reality is commercial fishing doesn't pay its way in Alaska and we (Alaskans and the ecosystem) are better off without the entire industry. Imagine the abundance the Kenai would have if it were for a century of gillnet and trawl bycatch.
Pot fishing is the cleanest fishing, the bycatch we catch is still alive not smashed and killed.
Um, pot gear discards more than 3 million pounds a year and is the single largest source of red king crab discard mortality.
You mean the 10 big boats that fish cod outside port moller. Unimak pass and the gulf catch no king crab.
Interesting that when we are discussing what is best for Alaskans why the topic of native corporations investment in Bering Sea fisheries is not brought up?
Many tribes have big stakes in corporate fishing and quota ownership.
Don't hate trawl and all the millions of pounds of bycatch, because other fisheries have bycatch.
