Trump watch

President Trump today issued an executive order titled Restoring American Seafood Competitiveness.

  1. Trump is going to fix the U.S. seafood industry. What could possibly go wrong?

  2. It would fix most of our problems if we did a trade restriction on farmed salmon. Base it on antibiotics or animal welfare.

Europe has a bunch of restrictions on our products.

  3. Does this mean I still have to pitch in for ASSSSMI vacations or did they just get DOGEd?

PS — I'm also aware that there is definitely some devilry in the fine print.

  4. Maybe get rid of the sea lion restrictions. They are a pain in the ass being there's so many now. No need to be on the ESA list.

    1. I concur. Aggressive animals going to snatch up a kid one day.

  5. Two rumored moves are 1) eliminate the unfair limited entry system in Bristol Bay, and 2) close down ADF&G or hobble its efforts to manage fishing periods, escapements and all the other ridiculous regulations (kings on the Nushagak) that get in the way of catching more fish!

  6. I noticed this part of the EO: "Most American fish stocks are healthy and have viable markets. Despite these opportunities, seafood is one of the most heavily regulated sectors in the United States."

Stocks are healthy BECAUSE they are heavily regulated! Sheesh.

It makes you wonder, though, what this EO will mean in practice.

  7. Bristol Bay never had limited entry, 9:32 — 872 drift permits issued in 1974 exploded to 1,877 in 2024. Limited meant unlimited in Bristol Bay, unlike every other salmon fishery in the state. By example, Prince William Sound was issued 577 permits in 1974 and had 540 in 2004. Unfair is correct, when the legal term "limited" confuses you. You must still be trying to figure out why 800 boats can't make it in Bristol Bay, as reported in those quartile reports the CFEC publishes every year. Rumors, it's like that Fleetwood Mac album, and that song "Don't Stop."

  8. Smoke and mirrors. Magnuson is still the law of the land and the courts can decide if the national standards are followed. Catching more fish will drive prices and surpluses up and sustainability down. It sounds like this was driven by the anti-catch share gang on the East Coast. It might help them catch the last few codfish and tunas in their depleted ocean.

  9. Just returned from D.C. Likely action as result of EO: Nothing is gonna change.
