Buck Laukitis, a Homer commercial fisherman and former member of the North Pacific Fishery Management Council, has submitted a
blistering commentary on the poor state of the halibut fishery.
"I have no confidence in the IPHC's approach," he writes, referring to the International Pacific Halibut Commission.
Ask any serious halibut fisherman. They'll say the same thing. IPHC has their heads up their ^#^*\.
ReplyDeleteIn addition to Buck's questions, IPHC needs to address the unguided sportfishing removals. Why does the IPHC refuse to come up with a hard number for these unguided anglers? Something's fishy....
All sectors need to take some cuts. Fish come first.
ReplyDeleteThe most political, valuable, and prized fish in Alaska, the mighty halibut, has been squandered under the current disastrous management scheme. The root of the problem is the people managing the fishery will simply retire to a government pension with zero consequences.
