Another buyback vote for Southeast seiners

A federal notice published yesterday sets up another referendum on further reducing the number of Southeast Alaska purse seine salmon permits.

"The referendum, if approved, will result in a loan of $10.1 million and permanently retire an additional 36 permits from the fishery," the notice says.

The notice lists all the permit holders eligible to vote in the referendum.

The voting period will start Jan. 15 and end on Feb. 14.

  1. Can someone explain the logic of future permit holders making expensive payments on a loan that guarantees the wealth and high sell-point of permits held by only the CURRENT permit holders?

  2. There has NEVER been any logic to this plan it is purely based on greed and speculation. We have already had a buyout and it has not helped at all. The fleet is just too big with too little area and far too few fish.

  3. After 2 wrecked years in a row what seiner is ready to take on more expense? and its an expense that lasts 30 years.

  4. They pay it out of the crewshare. It's a good deal for the owners.
