State Rep. Jonathan Kreiss-Tomkins, D-Sitka, has filed House Bill 294 to create a "herring spawn classic."
The classic would be "a game of chance in which prizes are awarded for the closest guess of the postseason preliminary estimate of nautical miles of shoreline receiving spawn of Pacific herring, as determined by the Department of Fish and Game from aerial surveys between March and May," the bill says.
The Sitka Tribe of Alaska would operate the classic, Kreiss-Tomkins says in this sponsor statement.
After wiping a herring fishery off the map by fishing it into extinction, why not get the whole casino. With todays Zero Miles of Spawn, Kreiss Tomkins could amend, and toss in a few Blackjack Tables too.

Meanwhile, Rome continues to burn and the legislature is playing games. Seems like pin the tail on the donkey would be more appropriate!
ReplyDeleteJKT should spend his time introducing bills with value and substance...this herring BS and his license plate art BS.
ReplyDeleteEnough with the community organizing and free handouts, people are suffering!
Time to get rid of this unqualified child!
Why do we elect people if their best work in Juneau is summed up by a game of chance by which prizes are awarded?
ReplyDeleteSeriously, are you kidding me?
Pretty soon ADFG won't have the money to measure the spawn so there won't be a winner.
ReplyDeleteexcept for the adfg guy that bets on his own prediction
ReplyDeleteWhy are they spending their time, that we pay them for, on a game.
ReplyDeleteGo do what you were elected for, and work as hard as you are doing to NOT WORK. Go do your @#$%*$G JOB. Or you are FIRED.
this would be a great idea if it generated money for fish and game.
ReplyDeleteIt's always impressive how little AK fishermen seem to know about their government, and yet they never stop complaining! Don't you realize these token/symbolic bills are the only are the only ones the house minority is realistically able get passed? During Jonathan's first year, he was the only member of the minority to get a signed into law--no not the stupid bear license plate bill, that wasn't his--a bill recognizing native languages as official in AK. It's unfortunate to hear you all bashing an intelligent and concerned politician who goes out of his way to listen to fishermen and address the changing needs of our industry, even if that means working from behind the scenes for now.... . Give him a break, learn you're government works, and try holding majority members accountable for wasting time on nonsense when they the power to implement meaningful legislation.
ReplyDelete11:38, when you are done hugging unicorns, come out from under the rainbow and realize who JKT works for. None of his legislation addresses any issues that are problematic to his constituents. All of it addresses problems in other regions that "fixing" with his solutions could cause problems within his own district or others around the state. This particular "piece" actually does address something in his district, but it isn't fixing anything that is broken. It would in fact enable an entity that has been hell bent on closing or minimizing a commercial fishery. JKT's district probably represents more commercial fishing permits than any other district in the region. Two boroughs in his district are major fishing ports and processing centers that rely on the commercial fishing industry to fuel their economy. Forgive us for demanding something besides problem fixing for western Alaska. There is more to being an effective legislator than introducing bills. Even if he is in the minority, he can still vote, debate, influence to the best of his ability to address his constituents concerns.
ReplyDeleteWe all know what gear group and what processor put him in office.
ReplyDeletePlease don't make it sound like he has the best interest of all permit holders, gear groups in mind.
