Trollers 'outraged' over Chinook quota

The summer troll season for Chinook salmon in Southeast Alaska will open July 1.

But the state announcement fails to clearly spell out the quota.

The Alaska Trollers Association says the quota is 237,000 fish. And the trollers are outraged.

Wes what going on in the bay? We should know something if this huge forecast will happen, it peaks in 8 days.

The endangered specie aspect of Columbia River fish could have something to do with the reduced impact on those stocks. There are strict limitations in the Oregon and Washington commercial take of those Chinooks.

Ya shut down gulf trawling for 2700 fish but let the directed fishery take 237,000. That makes great sense. Fucking stupid.

Oh Did they shut down gulf trawling this year, Did not know that. Quite coincidental most rivers had much improved King salmon for the first time in years. I think we may have found the problem.

They shut down the bottom fishing in april. Genetic samples have been taken and most of the fish were hatchery fish and in the past few years pollock fishing salmon bycatch is way down for a number of reasons. If youre going to complain about commercial fishermen catching king salmon you might as well get your facts straight and talk to a salmon fishermen. Seiners catch a shitload of king salmon and chum and noone says a thing. Why is that? And then you have gill and setnetters as well getting them in unknown numbers because they arent observed.
The bottom trawling cap was overly restrictive and allocated harshly against shore based boats. Not accounting for all historical catch of salmon in the past and not making considerations for allocating more for areas that had communities affected.
If there is a problem with king salmon numbers the directed fishery should take the hardest hit. Bycatch is a good use of the resource if it allows for harvest of valuable fish.
