Marine sanctuary proposal turned back

Federal officials have rejected the nomination of vast waters along the Aleutian chain as a national marine sanctuary.

The sponsor of the idea vows to persevere.

Alaska Congressman Don Young, in a press release last week, listed the considerable local opposition to the proposed marine sanctuary.

I read the PEER press release. I will be curious to see if the group presses Obama to designate under the "Antiquities Act" and make the area a National Monument. I don't know how commercial fishing would fare then...thinking of Glacier Bay in SE. Hopefully this idea dies a quiet death.

Incidentally, the claim in the press release that there are no established traffic lanes in the Aleutian passes ignores the shipping lanes charted for Unimak Pass.
