Copper River starts slow

Thursday's 12-hour season opener at the Copper River produced an estimated catch of 27,700 sockeye salmon and 1,000 Chinook, the Alaska Department of Fish and Game reports.

The department had anticipated a catch of 33,000 sockeye for the period.

Deckboss hasn't heard any price reports but reckons the fish paid handsomely, as they always do at the start of the season.

The Copper River District will open at 7 a.m. Monday for another 12-hour period.

Better than a fast season of the past, and that $0.95 answer.

ADF&G Technical Data Report No 95.

"The 1980 Copper River sockeye salmon commercial catch was 18,451 fish, the lowest since 1892."

You can be sure that the 1980 opener was at least a 24 hour period.

I agree, it is better to start with a normal return and then build. I would not call 27K difference from 33K, as starting slow. I would rather catch less fish and be paid more dollars per lb. 2nd opener today was better, though probably 60K, price still high.

Been fishin long, 8:48?

Not even a 24 minute opener, on Copper River Sockeye. (1980)

Science can be confusing. MSC, approved.

"The Copper River and Bering River districts remained closed during the 1980 season except for a closely managed quota chinook salmon catch of 8,434 fish out of a possible quota of 10,000 (Table 1). The 1980 chinook salmon catch was 39% of the l a s t 10 year average. The Copper River commercial sockeye salmon catch of 18,451 occurred primarily after 21 July when fishing on late Copper River Delta spawning stocks was allowed and was 3%of the last 10 year average. The 1980 sockeye salmon catch was the lowest on record since 1892....

8:48 pm...how much money would like to wager on that "you can be sure that the 1980 period was at least a 24 hour period". I will bet that it was a 6 hour period with king only.
