The judge recognized the absurdity of the ESSN claims. Essentially they indicated that it would be ok to let the kings go away forever in order to save the reds for themselves. There is not an ounce of conservation in them. They refuse to recognize the worth of the sports fisheries to all the businesses and the communities. They refuse to try new methods of fishing that will save kings and instead throw insults at anyone who suggests that they are part of the problem. They better change and soon or they will find that set netting will be outlawed or there will be an imitative to take them out of the fishery. Set netting has been banned all over the world because it targets all stocks and is not discriminating for stocks that need protection. Watch out ESSN people. Your days are numbered.
Got their sorry butts handed to them. They were in Looney-Toon land with a (probably)lawyer-fisherman blowing smoke up the already fluffed kilts. Next up: the dippy-do's and their insane need to send more smoked and frozen reds to uncle Bob in Johnson Lake MN. If you want to see what rabid so-called 'sport fisherman' and one of their high priests think, go here (WARNING! not for the faint of heart or rational thinkers):
When are you sporties gonna try new methods that will save kings? The early run is worse off than the late run and only sporties fish that run. Maybe it's time to get the masses off the spawning ground. No fishing in fresh water unless there's an over escapement.Qghtsnl 51
Exactly - the devastation from people walking the banks and the boats zooming the river affects the spawning more than anything. The sport fisherman and dipnetters as user groups leave so much trash; & their fish carcases attract bears.
Only "sporties" fish the early run??? Really! The Kodiak set net group harvest them. the Ak Penn group in area m harvest them. and the marine fishery harvests them. But the real issue is the late run and that is what the law suit was about, in case you forgot. And both the drift and set net fleet harvest those kings. So, instead of finding ways to minimize that harvest, instead you blame the "sporties" Claim that they leave garbage, walk the banks, etc. And you just ignore the issue with all the noise you raise as a smoke screen. And finally some of you suggest that perhaps the Dept should allow the demise of the Kings in order to protect the commercial sockeye fishery. Wow! It is the ignorance of the value to the community and State that Chinooks bring to the table that will eventually bring down the ESSN fishery as being biologically unnecessary and very harmful. So go ahead and keep bashing the "sporties' and ignore your own responsibilities. Your days are numbered if you do not try to help with the problem instead of being part of the problem.
The Lower Sport Marine fishery south of Bluff Point harvests a zillion kings. Gee, the Early run was Run Down by Bob's favorite buddies - the Sport Guides. Oh tell your Whale of Tale to the residents who harvest 10 percent of the Early Run and 25 percent of the Late Run. ADFG and Sporties tout World Reknown Biologically Best Managed Fishery in the World and Nothing But.
