Shrimping starts slow in Prince William Sound

Last week's four-day season opener in the Prince William Sound shrimp pot fishery produced a modest catch of 8,761 pounds, with 21 vessels participating.

Another four-day period begins today, the state Department of Fish and Game says.

The quota for the year is 66,300 pounds, so plenty of shrimp left to catch if fishermen can find them.

"if fishermen can find them."

Dragged up and killed in a trawl net = missing biomass.

How does Deck Boss know that there are plenty of shrimp? Surely not just because the ADF&G says so. Or, sets a quota. Isn't that the same ADF&G that set the Sitka herring quota at nearly 30,000 tons last year only to see around 13,000 tons harvested. and missed again this year when the quota was around 13,000 tons and the harvest was less than half that amount. Let's see. If the quota for PWS shrimp is around 66,000# what should we expect, 25,000#? Then next year?
