Alaska commercial fishing news and notes
Looks like the state is drinking the Kool Aid too.
What does this mean for the 58 footers?I thought the current observer plan started at 59 feet?So now there is a gap from 57.5' to59' ?
58 footers will finally be observed. Let the whining begin.
It's about time that the State of Alaska is getting involved. Trawlers crashing a state symbol is a black eye for the managers.Their "Just wait and see" policy for years is so unscientific!
This observer program will depend on the ethics and values of the observers hired. It could become the newest link to the Buddy System already in place than it'd be another worthless attempt to address a horrific problem - that of destroying the Salmon Culture of Western Alaska.
58 owners have exceeded the LOA limit by adding bulbous bows and add measuring Canadian seiners to fish Alaska. This is a violation that Alaska state troopers need to address.
Perhaps a plumb bob from both ends while on blocks and a measurement on the ground, similar to BB's 32's back in the 90's will tell the story. Anyone can do that.
bulbousbows dont typically go past the bow dipshit..you want to whine about a feature that adds stability to a vessel that in turn saves lives you are truely an idiot..
You feel the pointy stick 7:21. Since when did a bulb bow save a life? You say yourself "typically" that some do exceed the limit, a law broken regardless of your argument.
mines olny 56 without a bulb but i know boats better than most.you've obviously never fished the big water to make a statement like that..not to mention what they save on fuel consumtion..why do you think people put them on?
You cannot attack the truth and no one is going to pull you out of the boiling water you stepped in.Fished 49 years sonny, everyone knows why bulbous bows are added on. If the rules are enforced in BB, then they should be enforced everywhere.
I wonder who the "Association of Professional Observers" is--other than Elizabeth Mitchell? Some "group" she operates out of a mail box in Oregon. After reading her inane statements in the Medred article on observers, I don't put much stock in what she has to say.
Regarding bulbous bows - read the regulations before you post nonsense. Bulbous bows are clearly exempt from overall length measurement as is clearly stated in current regs. If you want to change the regs have a go at it, but stop making shit up.
7:39 there is a regulation that supercedes the 58' LOA limit law? State OR Federal? Clearly you know more than I. Where can I find it?
The Alaska law regarding bulbous bows is:5 AAC 39.117Quote "Only that portion of the vessel comprising the bulbous bow may cause the vessel to exceed a vessel overall length limitation. "
That law can be sen here:http://www.adfg.alaska.gov/index.cfm?adfg=fishregulations.commercialScroll down to 39. General Provisions
