This year's catch of nearly 20.6 million sockeye at Bristol Bay paid fishermen $117.8 million, says this season summary from the Alaska Department of Fish and Game.
The crown jewel of our salmon fisheries. To the crybaby local: There are permits available on an everyday basis. Your state loan values just got doubled. Go buy one. The economic value of this fishery to the state, on a year to year basis, is precious. To fishermen, it provides the best gross stock/expense ratio for salmon. Every year there are winners and whiners, but the important thing is to put fish in the crick.
Instead of listing the $117.8 million that it was worth to the fishermen, why don't you list what the actual final market value is at the consumer level is?
Still getting paid the same ex-vessel prices at 30 years ago. Too bad fuel prices, insurance, food, supplies, gear and everything else wasn't the same price as 30 years ago.
Surprisingly(?) mum on the abruptness of the season and how badly AFG misplayed the Port Moller data this year.
ReplyDeleteWhoop-de-da, big hairy deal. A lot of those BB fishermen are from out of state.

ReplyDeleteState loan values doubled? Better look again, dude. Bristol Bay permits are down to $85,000 - almost half of what they were two years ago.
ReplyDeleteThe state will let you borrow twice as much for a permit is what he said.

ReplyDeleteThat would be some worthy reporting.
