Kotzebue's turn

The 2012 season opens tonight at Kotzebue, Alaska's farthest north commercial salmon fishery.

The Alaska Department of Fish and Game says it expects a good run of chum salmon, forecasting a harvest of 250,000 to 280,000 fish.

To put that in perspective, the projected chum harvest for entire state this season is 19.1 million fish.

Here's the official announcement on Kotzebue's kickoff.

  1. 32 cents a pound. From what I'm hearing not too many permit holders plan to fish. But I'm not there....I'm in Dutch Harbor.

  2. Roughly two fifty for a seven pound chum. Got to catch at least twelve to cover the cost of a five gallon can of gas. It might be better to let them chum live.

  3. yeah, "let them chum live" and spawn and maybe they'll stray into the Nome area rivers that the managers have been mismanaging to extinction for going on 30 years.

  4. Printed in the July 19, 2012 issue of 'The Nome Nugget' is the NSEDC, Norton Sound's CDQ program prices of "...55 cents per pound for chum salmon and 40 cents per pound for pink salmon..."! Pink Salmon brings in more per pound than chum salmon in the Kotzebue sound. Must be a good market demand for humpies somewhere.
