Oregon vs. Alaska?

Evidently some commercial fishermen in Oregon, specifically crabbers who fish the Bering Sea, are feeling threatened.

Here's a resolution signed yesterday by the mayor of Newport, Ore., supporting the addition of two more Oregon seats on the North Pacific Fishery Management Council, which regulates federal fisheries off Alaska.

As it stands, Oregon has only one seat on the 11-member council, while Alaska has six seats and Washington three.

The Newport resolution raises fears that Oregon crabbers might soon lose some of their annual crab income due to the "unfair partisan conduct" of the council's Alaska majority.

Deckboss isn't quite sure what to make of this, but of course he'll endeavor to find out more.

3 for Oregon, 3 for Washington and 4 for Alaska...

  2. All for this 3 in Oregon. There is a very large contingent of Fishermen from the Newport Oregon area. Let's have some sort of equal representation. We are Fishermen and have been in this area for years.
    It only make sense.

    I support it completely.

  3. Boo fucking hoo. There are also a lot of fishermen in New Bedford. Maybe we should give Mass a few seats while we're at it. I say we throw all the WA and OR fucks off the Council.

  4. The WA and OR fucks?

Isn't it the AK fucks, like our friend Arnie who so much difficulty in interpertation of those boundry lines, and laws of the United States.

Federal Prison, for another almost American NPMFC member?

The AK fucks, explained to perfection "without a rudder"

  5. Alaska has a majority on the fishery council for Alaska. What a crime against humanity indeed!

Maybe it will make sense to take Newport's resolution seriously when the mayor proposes Alaska should have a majority on the council for the fisheries off OR and WA.

  6. And when exactly was the North Pacific Alaska's?

Even a person from Marblehead Masschuettes understands this concept? Didn't that fleet from Nantuckett, also get stuck in that Bering Sea Ice too?

When exactly did 3 make a majority on a 11 member board?

Has it always been required to flunk kindergarden math to fish the North Pacific?

  8. Three is a majority, I GUESS THAT DEPENDS ON POSITION?

    OR, WA, AK?

pon pon! pon pon! pon pon!

    Hello All Stations!

Alaska still owns the North Pacific, what a CLASSIC, when you've never been to Seward.

  9. The fact of the matter is that the fisheries off Alaska belong to ALL Americans - - - not Alaskans. The North Pacific Council is the only council with a majority of the seats controlled by one state. The Alaskan majority on the council has repeatedly gerrymandered the vote in favor of Alaskans to the detriment of other US citizens. It is time to bring voting balance to the North Pacific Council by increasing the number of seats held by citizens of other North Pacific states which have citizens fishing in Alaska.

  10. Is this about crab or GOA rationalization?

  11. We don't need anymore redneck loggers who are legends in their own minds on any sort of council that has been making fairly rational decisions for decades. One Oregon member is enough...trust me I worked on an Oregon boat for years.

  12. loose some crab income??? they stole it from the crews to begin with.

  13. This is about fairness! This is about ethics and it's about "Leveling the Playing Field" for all fishermen in these FEDERAL waters. This bias on the NPFMC is not helping Alaska Residents either. If Additional delegations from Oregon can be seated immediately I am all for it!

  14. Why don't we just throw the foxes out of the henhouse? Oops. Wouldn't even have a quorum with that plan.

  15. The problem, as I see it, is that the federal fisheries management/council system has become dysfunctional. A new system is overdue that might be more responsive to and flexible for all. I personally turned down a Council nomination because I could not see the present system worth the investment of my time. To me, the present system is co-opting at lot time and energy for almost all involved.
So, Oregon, think about a new system rather than reform to a crumbling one.

  17. This is all about keeping the eye off of the real ball! The NPFMC, NOAA and the DOJ must require that the layshare contracts for Crab Ratz and all fisheries be turned over since they are all required by law to have a contract with every crewman. Plus the crewmen are not receiving fully reconcilable settlement sheets from the vessel owners which violates their legal rights to be paid correctly. And the IRS will need all the information to make sure everyone is paying their taxes corretly.

Sure we all know that CDQs discriminate against all active commercial fishermen, and other fishing communities in AK, WA, & OR! In fact, the CDQ groups have hijacked Bering Sea Crab & pollock rights using their non-profits status (with for profits companies and subsidiaries) to buy quota, vessels, and processing rights as a favor from Ted Stevens & Don Young in CG legislation years ago. And the Congress thought 8A no-bid contracts were a special deal for native organizations, now they have a group of Bering Sea villages taking over almost a majority of Bering Sea fisheries and leaving the active fishermen with sharecropper status.

Kris Poulsen has made millions from Crab Ratz, sold his boat to a CDQ group, made moneys from managing some of their rights. His son, Edward, is a little puke that has made one cod trip in is life and couldn't walk across the deck without hurting himself. And he states he the executive director of the Alaska Bering Sea Crabbers, and he's never seen a crab deck or ever prosecuted a BS crab fishery. Hey you little puke, I have 25 years fishing the Bering Sea for crab and would love for you to come on deck with me.

The rubbish about adding members from WA and OR will never fly, but the NPFMC has racketeered to give special rights to processor and the quota share holders while violating the National Standards of the MSA. It will all come out in the wash. Felonies have been committed and many people should go to jail and have their millions forfeited for stealing from the crewmen. As everyone knows not one quota would have ever been issues without the crews going to sea and risking their lives to bring the size & sex sorted crab to the dock to deliver alive.

Bottomline: The crewmen 1,000 crewmen that lost their jobs and the rest that stayed in the fishery need to be compensated for lost earnings and damages: $180 million compensation + $400 million in privileges/rights + hundreds in millions in damages.

Just wait until the DOJ comes in this time. The won't have Brendan Sullivan & Associates to sidetrack justice like Ted Stevens and Oliver North. Sorry the CIA can't fix this one!

Check out the above photo of Sen. Lisa Murkowski talking to the crew of the Alsea, a Newport vessel. I shot the photo in Dutch Harbor in early Sept. Is there any chance these guys will get half an hour with a senator from Oregon or Washington? I'll bet they've never met Ron Wyden or the other guy....they should just move to Alaska. Oregon is not a place for fishermen or loggers.

  19. The Council already moves at a snails place, if you want better representation get rid of the Alaskan Commisioner of Fish and Game seat. That position represents the Governor of Alaska, not the people of anywhere. You don't need more rats eating the cheese, just a few to make the cheese last.

  20. Begich may work hard to make sure that it never sees the light of day. But, he's very much a junior senator to the likes of Wahsington State's Patty Murray. She's become what Ted Stevens and Senator Magnuson used to be. If it gets to congress, Alaska is outgunned in this one. On the other hand, congress doesn't seem to be able to legislate itself out of a paper bag these days, so it might all amount to nothing.

  21. The "Bering Sea villages......taking over the majority of the Bering Sea fishery.." is about a handful of greedy men conning the ignorant and illiterate stakeholders who are the majority in those villages refered to. It's only been in the last five years that the stakeholders have learned about Salmon ByCatch of the pollock fishery. They did not wish this problem upon themselves. CDQ 20 year review - 2012. Demand that it happens as mandated.
