Bristol Bay Economic Development Corp. is looking for a president and chief executive officer.
Dillingham-based BBEDC is one of six Alaska fishing companies operating under the federal Community Development Quota program.
Last I heard, Robin Samuelsen was BBEDC's president and CEO, and he remains so listed on the company's website.
Hopefully the people of Bristol Bay are leading the change in the structure of their CDQ program -it's either them or a 'take-over' from within. Norton Sound's CDQ program, NSEDC, has had at least three 'take-over's' in the last 20 years. Those millions and millions of dollars from the Pollock Fishery is pretty tempting for book cooking because there is NO FEDERAL, STATE or STAKEHOLDER oversight on those PUBLIC MONIES CDQ programs. They are all in the hands of a HANDFUL of men playing BIG SHOT with the peoples money. Let's end their farce because that's what it is!

ReplyDeleteMaybe BBEDC copied what Norton Sound's CDQ group, NSEDC, did and Mr. Samuelsen set himself up for life! NSEDC formed a 'for-profit' branch and started funneling their CDQ monies into it. Isn't it backwards? The Non-profit giving money to their For-profit arm! What's that saying - 'having your cake and eating it too'.
We heard from a board member that a semi-spur of the moment motion was made to either now renew or confirm RS positions. It was seconded and passed with little discussion.

NOW let's hope they have the sense to go 'outside' and hire a professional. BBEDC needs some REAL staff upgrades....some excellent, some/many very marginal!! This is both up and down the ranks!!

ReplyDeleteMark "Eddie" Angasan of King Salmon made a motion to boot Robin S., it was seconded by Pat Paterson of Naknek and passed by the rest of the board.
They can spin it any way they want but there is a great amount of pent up anger on the direction BBEDC has gone and how very little has really changed in the villages in the last 15-20 years.
Bristol Bay may have a fighting chance getting him out of there. The Board needs to clean house and get qualified people running the place. the CAO and COO are not qualified to run a multi-million dollar business - one is a secretary, one is a store worker but they are cronies to "The Robin" of Bristol Bay.

ReplyDeleteRobinn' Robin hasn't did this all out of his heart, he's taken care of himself first and foremost. He had a market and didn't share with anyone, let us not forget.
ReplyDeleteCarpetbagging outside professionals and/or incompetent local nepotistic cronies are the problem with most rural Alaskan entities. These people take care of themselves first and everybody else last if at all. There has to be something better than the status quo.
ReplyDeleteRobin Samuelson is the stereotypical self-important, entitled, overpaid, underworked CDQ program pseudo-executive. He fell because of his arrogance and disregard for the CDQ program stakeholders. Western Alaskans need to wake up and recognize that the people controlling the CDQ program work for us. There needs to be a lot more of these firings until the rest of them realize that they don't own the program, the residents of the communities do.
Congratulations to the BBEDC board members who terminated Robin. BBEDC management has tried to control who is on the board of directors since the beginning but it looks like that didn't work this time.
Let's hope that they are able to hire a replacement for Samuelson who will live up to his fiduciary responsibility to the CDQ program stakeholders.

I've known people to submit applications to BBEDC and it never make it past this desk.
The qualifications for the job are pretty minimal for running a for-profit corporation posing as a tax exempt social welfare organization in the dog-eat-dog competitive industrial commercial fishing industry.
ReplyDeleteThat has been a major problem for the ANCSA corporations and for the CDQ groups; the fallacious idea that since the homeboys don't have much education or real world business experience, we'll just hire one of them anyway, pay them as much as a real corporation CEO and toss him into the deep end to see if he can swim with the sharks. The wreckage and money lost because of this fallacy is monumental. So let's just keep doing it, after all if we fail Uncle Ted will bail us out. Oh wait. He's not here anymore is he?
BBEDC reported $168,096,875 in total assets at the end of 2009. Is it so easy to run a corporation of that size that the CEO doesn't need to be a tad better qualified than what is says in the advertisement?

Kudos to Mark A. and Pat P for getting the CDQ ball rolling in Bristol Bay. You two are lucky the rest of the board backed you up. Lucky, lucky, lucky. Norton Sound's CDQ board is passive so they follow the board bullies. I'm glad a blogger from the Bay pointed out "...how very little has really changed in the villages in the last 15-20 years." Let's direct some of that "pent up anger" down there in Bristol Bay and demand the State and NPFMC to start the procedure for the 2012 - 20 year REVIEW of the CDQ program. Bring the program back to the people.
We're losing our Subsistence Salmon to pollock fishery bycatch out here in the Western Alaska Coastal area. Poorest part of the state. Thousands of poor people, yet very little "pollock provides" benefits in the villages except for a handful. It's time to overhaul the CDQ program and dump brailer loads of Lame Ducks overboard!
Mark A and Pat P shall be commended. I listened to Robin's farewell on KDLG, does he think the place can't run without him? BBEDC Board, will Robin still have his fingers in the cookie jar by being on the Ocean Beauty Board? It us pretty common knowledge that purchase was for him to retire on.
ReplyDeleteWe have a similar situation up here in the Norton Sound with our CDQ program - NSEDC, as to that set up by Robin on the Ocean Beauty and his plan to "retire on" the board forever and ever. Nome's Representative to NSEDC, Donny Stiles, set himself up on the for profit arm of the CDQ, SIU(SEE-U) up here. The parent corporation, the non-profit NSEDC has no input at all. They don't even see their budget or their records. Pretty fishy, pretty fishy while the subsistence fishers look sadly at their empty drying racks.
