Not sure who Eric J is but it seems irrelevant who catches them if they are all going to the same market. If there were more opportunities for new entries into the fish processing business there might be some competition to break up these large companies and allow fair ex-vessel prices for this increased volume of high quality fish.
you are right about that, too bad that is not how this market works. the large processors control the fish, from waters edge to plate. from where fish deliveries go and when openings happen to who gets to sell the eggs and who gets to buy the flesh. and who flys the fish out to the price paid to ship otherwise. It really is a great place to do business if you are one of them, and a risky adventure if you are new, many have tried and many have died.
many do not realize just how powerful the processors are. the fishermen should know that if the processors could get the fish for nothing, they would. and don't think they aren't trying to find a way.
I understand how powerful the processors are, thank you for reminding me. I also know who they get alot of their fish from, and they are fed up/pissed off. Processor buyout of the fleet is the only thing stopping an organized labor strike.
Ever heard of Pacific Seafoods? Check out their most recent action- http://www.oregonlive.com/business/index.ssf/2010/06/class-action_lawsuit_acuses_pa.html
I hear Pacific Seafoods, the largest processor on the west coast is now linked by marriage to Trident Seafoods, and has an interest in Silver Bay Seafoods. Is this true?
Heard Arrow-tooth Flounder was going for $8/lb fresh in Seattle....Just looked today up here in Alaska and Frozen Pacific Cod Filets are going like hotcakes for $3.75/lb... Whats the ex-vessel value of these catches/lb?
Oh, good news! Looking forward to the season already - thanks for sharing this!
ReplyDeleteEric J will most likely catch them all..

Wondering where all our fresh fish is going and why we're eating farmed crap? It's called unfair trade.
