Off and running in Sitka

After days of waiting, seiners in Sitka Sound are finally chasing fish for keeps.

The sac roe herring fishery opened at 1:40 p.m., the Alaska Department of Fish and Game reports.

Deckboss is still chasing confirmation of the opening price.

    Market uncertainty makes this permit worthless. Big halibut cuts. Salmon will have to save the day!

    That is wise use of a resource, Canadians always were smarter on the water. ADF&G WHERE ARE YOU ON THIS ONE? Everyone knows where the players are, gambling foolishly. Greedy blind.

    I've heard that the Silver Bay fleet is fishing without a price and is being told to bring their own catch to the dock for the best hope of actually making money. This will just insure that even more leftover inventory will be in the freezer come next year.

    Interesting that you mention the Silver Bay fleet in such manner as in another more recent thread someone had mentioned that the fleet might have connection to Pacific Seafoods and Trident.

    Did you all know that you get more money per ton if you fished the herring for bait instead of sac roe? Bait herring is $0.22 - $0.27 per pound while sac roe is fetching a whopping $0.05 a pound!!! What a wasteful fishery - you need to step into the 21st century.
