Cook Inlet and Yukon River commercial fishermen will receive $7.8 million in "direct payments" to compensate for losses resulting from poor Chinook salmon runs, this federal notice says.
Checks "hopefully will go out in September or October," an aide to U.S. Sen. Mark Begich, D-Alaska, tells Deckboss.
This is the first installment of the $20.8 million allocated to Alaska under a congressional response to multiple fishery disasters across the nation.

Trawlers should be forced to match what the feds provide.
Amazing! Who ever guaranteed that fishermen would catch fish? If for legitimate reasons that existed at the time the fishery was closed, well that's fishing isn't it. No one, not the in river sports or the net fishers should benefit from the decisions by the ADFG to close fisheries for conservation reasons. Next the dip netters who have just as much rights will claim a disaster and want fed help. What a joke!
